REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP?

Registered Apprenticeship is a structured process that allows employers to create a customized skilled trades training program. The U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship (USDOL) recognizes the training pathway supported by the State of Michigan.

Registered Apprenticeships offer employers a chance to train new talent with minimal cost investment. Apprentices can learn career-building skills while getting paid, without requiring expensive certifications or degree programs.

There are three main components to a USDOL Registered Apprenticeship.

01Work Process Schedule

There are three types of On-the-Job Learning. One is time-based, where after a certain number of hours the apprentice is determined qualified or competent. The second kind is competency-based. Instead of tying the qualifications to a set of hours, apprentices must demonstrate competency in specific skills. The third type of apprenticeship program is called a hybrid. It’s a combination of time-based and competency where the apprentice is given blocks of time to develop their competencies

02Related Technical Instruction

Related Technical Instruction (RTI) consists of classroom instruction with practice in a simulated environment. RTI means that apprentices will have the chance to see how what they’ve learned in class applies directly to their job. This means no more struggling with the question, “why do I have to learn this?” Many employers pay any tuition costs related to RTI. However, there is state and federal funding available to cover the cost if they don’t.

03Wage Scale

For registered apprentices, an increasing wage scale is part of the process. The Department of Labor apprenticeship standards ensure that the apprentice’s wage will increase as their skills increase. This wage increase happens in increments, and is determined by the employer in their apprenticeship standards. It allows the apprentice to have goals, accountability, and a long-term vision for their future.
