Three Models Of On-the-Job Learning

Through structured learning in a work environment apprentices develop real skills that will benefit the company. Registered Apprenticeships can be delivered using three different models of evaluating success:

01 Time-BasedIn this model, each job task must be performed for a set number of hours, indicating that an apprentice has practiced enough to have mastered the task. Assigning blocks of hours ensures that the apprentice will spend enough time on the job to observe anomalies that come with the trade.

02 Competency-Based

In the competency-based model, apprentices must demonstrate their competence in each job skill in order to complete their apprenticeship. Competency is evaluated by the assigned mentor, and this model allows apprentices to learn job skills flexibly according to their learning pace.

03 HybridIn a hybrid model, both competence and time are used as measures of success. In this model, an employer outlines the maximum amount of time that is appropriate to develop each competency.

Implementing A Registered Apprenticeship

There are several models of implementing a Registered Apprenticeship that are recognized by the Department of Labor. These include:

Traditional
Apprentices are full-time employees and attend related classes part-time.

Front-Loaded
Apprentices receive all related technical instruction before beginning on-the-job learning.

Intermittent
A combination of full-time work and full-time school, apprentices alternate between working full time and learning full time on a schedule set by the employer.
